As part of its ongoing efforts to provide safe and interactive learning environments for children in the camp, Al-Bureij Society for Community Rehabilitation within the Learning and Psychosocial Recovery Units Project, implemented in partnership with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC/Quakers), organized a community initiative entitled “Colors Shine with Our Values”.
The initiative served as a culmination of the educational and psychosocial support activities provided to children in the center’s learning spaces.
It aimed to transform the positive values and behaviors acquired by children into vibrant artistic murals, while strengthening communication and engagement between the centre and the local community in Al-Bureij Camp.
Strong Community and Media Participation
The initiative brought together more than 100 boys and girls enrolled in the project, in addition to approximately 20 community and media representatives, including children’s parents, neighbours of the center and a group of artists and talented individuals.
The event was also attended by a delegation from the Popular Committee for Refugees in Al-Bureij Camp, headed by Dr. Fawzi Awad, along with representatives of Al-Bureij Society and its team, as well as the Education Officer and Education Coordinator from AFSC.
From Psychosocial Expression to Mural Painting
The event began with welcoming participants and introducing the vision and objectives of the initiative, which aimed to showcase the outcomes of the children’s sessions and provide them with safe spaces for expression.
Following the opening, children worked alongside artists and parents in a mural painting workshop.
The walls of the Society were transformed with colours representing values such as responsibility, cooperation, love, respect for others and tolerance.
The activity provided children with an opportunity for emotional expression and creative engagement while allowing them to express their aspirations through art.
Orientation Tour and Appreciation of Efforts
As part of the initiative, the Society’s Executive Director Eng. Manal Salim welcomed the delegation from the Popular Committee for Refugees on an introductory tour of the center’s classrooms and facilities.
The delegation received a detailed overview of the services provided by the Society, as well as the activities and educational objectives of the Learning and Psychosocial Recovery Units Project.
In the Education Room, the delegation viewed a presentation by the Project Coordinator showcasing children’s drawings and artistic works, reflecting their academic and psychosocial development.
During the tour, Dr. Fawzi Awad head of the Popular Committee for Refugees, praised the leading role of Al-Bureij Society and highlighted the educational and psychosocial significance of colours in promoting messages of resilience and hope. The visit also included a meeting between the delegation and the Education Coordinator from AFSC, during which the importance of continuing and strengthening these fruitful partnerships was emphasized.
Sustainable Impact and Looking Ahead
The initiative concluded with commemorative photographs documenting the community and institutional gathering. The organizers highlighted the initiative’s success in bringing smiles to children’s faces, providing a positive outlet for their emotions and energy, and strengthening parents’ understanding of the safe learning environment provided for their children.
The initiative also helped raise awareness of the rights of children in the camp, particularly their right to play, learn, express themselves and participate in safe and inclusive activities.
